Firing stoneware to Cone 5 or 6 at a medium speed is crucial for achieving the desired results in terms of strength and aesthetics. Loading the kiln properly is essential to prevent warping and ensure even firing. Coating the kiln shelf with high-fire kiln wash provides a protective barrier and helps prevent sticking.

Placing bisque directly on the kiln shelf, ensuring it doesn't extend past shelves, and fully supporting it during firing are important practices. Dry footing the bottom of stoneware bisque and avoiding the use of stilts help maintain the integrity of the pieces during firing.

Using witness or shelf cones during firing is a good way to monitor the temperature and ensure that the kiln is reaching the appropriate heat levels for the stoneware.

When it comes to using stoneware, its durability and functionality make it ideal for dinnerware. It can withstand microwave, dishwasher, and oven use. However, it's important to follow proper procedures, such as preheating the oven with the stoneware inside and allowing it to cool gradually to room temperature to prevent thermal shock.

Avoiding drastic temperature changes, such as going from freezer to oven or vice versa, helps prevent damage to the clay body and glaze. Overall, following these guidelines ensures the best results when working with stoneware.
